Kuala Lumpur, 19th November 2010 – BMW Group Malaysia today welcomed the new MINI. Introduced in the MINI Cooper, MINI Cooper S and MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) variants, the cars which have captured the imagination of millions worldwide continue to set the bar as icons in the world automotive industry.
The new cars now also feature striking new looks, new and better performing engines and for the first time, showcases MINI Connected – the BMW Group’s innovation strategy for the MINI brand.
Introducing the new MINI, Geoffrey Briscoe, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia said, “Since it’s very beginning, the MINI has constantly evoked the timeless spirit of excitement in all of us, a spirit which continues to be shared by the new MINI that we are introducing today.”
Briscoe further added that the MINI brand continues to be a successful and growing brand for BMW Group Malaysia. “As of October 2010, BMW Group Malaysia has sold a total of 185 MINI’s, a growth of 5.4 percent compared to the previous year and with todays launch of the new MINI, we are confident that the MINI story will continue to be a successful one here in Malaysia.”said Briscoe.
As the world’s first maker of premium small cars, MINI broke new ground when the brand was re-introduced in 2001 by the BMW Group. The strategy of combining advanced drive and chassis technology, uncompromising quality and an individual style quickly earned MINI a special niche in car markets with a total of 1.7 million MINIs sold worldwide.
With the launch of the new MINI, the inimitable essence of the MINI is reinvigorated with sharpened up design features, vehicle efficiency, individuality and sheer outright fun to guarantee its position as the original premium small car.
“All MINI models share distinctive characteristics born out of the origins and tradition of the brand, a concept geared towards delivering maximum driving excitement, an appreciation of individual style and a commitment to premium quality. The new MINI incorporates many new technologies to let it rival any model in the premium segment in terms of safety, sustainability and connectivity while retaining the original MINI philosophy, Excitement” said Farid Sulaiman, MINI Manager at BMW Group Malaysia.
In external looks, a new geometry of the front and rear bumper enhances the presence of the new MINI giving the car sportier capabilities with a more defined premium character. Particularly on the MINI Cooper S and MINI John Cooper Works, the eye catching outer air intakes further underline the sports like character of the car.
Looking at the car from the side, a new design of the familiar MINI side indicator surrounds, the area between the front side panel and the door, provides an extra finely-judged touch of elegance to the cars overall character. The glass covers over the indicators now have a very striking structure formed of concentric circles while a combination of shiny and matt black surfaces hint at the MINI’s contempory and trend setting nature. The borders of the positioning light units and foglamps have also been made more prounounced with three-dimensional contours.
The new MINI is now also available with new exterior colour schemes of Eclipse Grey, Spice Orange, White Silver and British Racing Green for the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S. For the MINI John Cooper Works, Chilli Red is now available exclusively as a contrast colour for the roof and exterior mirror caps, and can be combined with the Pepper White, Pure Silver, Midnight Black, British Racing Green and Eclipse Grey paint finishers for the body. To further complement the effect, the standard fitted 17-inch light alloy wheels in Cross Spoke Challenge design are available in black.
As an option, customers can also obtain the Glass Roof package. The glass roof on the new MINI offers one touch operation and convenient opening through radio-remote control key. The package can be obtained for an additional RM 9, 988.
Inside, high-quality materials and an extremely harmonious colour scheme mark out the contemporary and exclusive interior character of the new MINI while newly designed controls for the audio and air-conditioning systems ensure optimised funcationality and ergonomics. The all new trim elements and colour lines together with a range of exterior paint finishers and new wheel designs also offers new touches to the already amazing looking car.
The interior of the MINI John Cooper Works is kitted out with black sports seats featuring contrasting red stitching and red piping or an option of black sports seats with white piping. The steering wheel rim, gearshift lever and handbrake lever gaiters also have contrasting red stitching with trim elements in Piano Black. Antracite-coloured dials are also fitted as standard on the MINI John Cooper Works.
The innovative character of the new MINI is expressed in the exciting range of new features which includes the automatic dimming exterior side mirrors and new ambient lighting covering an extremely broad spectrum of colours. The auto dipping, electrochromatic exterior mirrors increase driving safety and comfort at night by reducing the unpleasant dazzling of the mirrors as a resulf of reflected light from vehicles to the rear of the MINI, an occasional cause of dangerous driving situations. In addition, the exterior side mirrors can also be folded in for space optimisation as well.
In engines, cutting-edge drive system technology boasting exceptional variety headlines the range of petrol engines for the new MINI, which was introduced in July 2010. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder units also boast a host of technical features whose development is rooted in the oustanding wealth of engine expertise within the BMW Group.
All the petrol engines are equipped with fully variable valve management. This technology optimises the engine’s responses and at the same time significantly reduces fuel consumption and emmisions levels. In the MINI Cooper S, it join forces with the petrol direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger, making the engine the most efficient in its displacement class.
In terms of output, the MINI Cooper delivers 88kW/120 hp and 160 Nm of Torque , enabling the car to hit the 0 to 100 km/h mark in 10.4 seconds with an average fuel consumption of 6.7 litres per 100km and a CO2 emission rating of 156 grams per km.
Meanwhile, the MINI Cooper S is further fitted with petrol direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger capable of generating 135 kW/184 hp and 240 Nm of Torque with an overboost of 260 Nm at high speeds, giving the car the most efficient engine in its displacement class. With these features the MINI Cooper S delivers acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds while managing an average fuel consumption of just 6.7 litres per 100km and a CO2 emission rating of 155 grams per km.
The top of the range MINI Cooper John Cooper Works now churns out 155kW/ 211hp with 260 Nm of Torque and an additional 280 Nm overboost at high speeds to make the 0 to 100KM dash in 6.5 seconds, whilst only consuming 7.1 litres per 100KM of fuel and emiting only 165g per KM of CO2.
True to its trend setting nature, the new MINI introduced to the world and now to the Malaysian market, the key innovative feature of MINI Connected as an optional package. The MINI Connected package is a suite of technology features that opens the door to a globally unique form of in-car entertainment, utilising technology specifically developed to integrate the telecommunications, entertainment and online functions of an iPhone into the MINI.
MINI-specific functions are integrated using a MINI Connected Application (App) operated using a central joystick, steering wheel buttons and an on-board monitor. Using the familiar MINI display and operating logic, MINI Connected allows all functions to be used comfortably, simply, safely and intuitively with minimal distraction from the road ahead.
